Exploring the Options: The 2013 EBSCOhost Healthcare Resources Summit 1

On July 8, the EBSCOhost Healthcare Resources Summit was held.  Librarians from Sullivan University and Spencerian College’s Louisville campuses, along with faculty from the College of Nursing and the Office of Institutional Research, met with EBSCOhost representatives Sarah Perlmutter (in person) and Erin Cheever (through online conferencing).

You may be asking, “What is EBSCOhost?”  EBSCOhost is an online database collection that is available to all Sullivan University System (SUS) faculty, staff and students.  EBSCOhost databases cover a variety of subjects, including: business, academia, hospitality, criminal justice, healthcare and much more.  A number of resources are accessible in a full-text format.

The ebooks platform and a newly introduced database, CINAHL Complete, were the primary focuses of the Healthcare Resources Summit.

EBSCOhost provides access to ebooks on many topics and subjects. Recently, the library has started to purchase ebooks through EBSCOhost.  The representatives demonstrated how to access, use and save items using the ebook platform.  Options for purchase were reviewed.  One item of interest was the patron driven access (PDA) option, as well as the ‘rent to own’ option.  Interested faculty can also be added to EBSCOhost’s Electronic Collection Manager (ECM) to create their own ebook ‘wish list.’

CINAHL Complete is an expansion of the current CINAHL products. CINAHL stands for the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.  The library currently subscribes to CINAHL Plus with Full Text but will be subscribing to CINAHL Complete in the near future.  CINAHL Complete provides full-text access to 1,356 journals, as well as evidence-based care sheets, drug guide information, quick lessons, skills sheets and a number of ebooks. A demonstration of the database took place.  Of particular interest of several participants was the ability to obtain nursing continuing education units (CEUs) using CINAHL Complete.

All in all, the summit provided a great deal of information that will enhance the library’s collection development process and provide useful resources to faculty and students.

Are you interested in learning more about the EBSCOhost platform? Would you like to have the ability to create your own ebook ‘wishlist?’ The library staff is happy to help!  You can always send us an email at libsul@sullivan.edu.
